As Pequod, my energy engineering company, grew through the late seventies, it was easy to see that its value WAS the crew of dedicated eco-nerds we all were. By the end of the eighties, I had given most of the company to the other "Pequoids". When we sold it in 1996, some remarkable things happened. A woman who joined us as a 17 year old drop out bought her dream house in Maine. Our 45 year old accountant dropped out, got a PhD in psychology and is relieving torment around the world. Our best times at Pequod were in adversity when we would pull hard together through the rapids . . . like you are doing this year at SMC.

Shared ownership among stakeholders is the principle behind Vineyard Power, a movement to assume control of the means of energy production here in the Vineyard by a cooperative of the people who live here. I think it fits us well and points the way to those stuck in the middle of the minefield you described in another post.

John,
Since returning home Monday, I've polled several of my key employees about the coop possibility, and everyone is interestd in looking hard at it. I have ordered 4 more copies of your book to circulate in my company, and have the feeling that something has already changed for the good. One foot in front of the other.....
